Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct skip operations
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for conducting skip operations and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Receive, interpret and clarify shift changeover details
   • Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment
   • Perform equipment and work area pre-start checks
   • Check records for outstanding maintenance/inspections, record defects and take action
   • Identify, address and report defects and potential hazards and risks
   • Carry out start-up procedures including checking that the area is clear for operations
   • Identify, address and report environmental issues
   • Adhere to emergency procedures
   • Apply dust suppression and extraction methods
2. Operate skip
   • Load skip with materials not exceeding capacity and minimising spillage
   • Communicate with relevant personnel
   • Operate skip safely with regard to the site conditions
   • Monitor and manage skip performance using appropriate indicators
   • On identification of contaminants, follow skip shutdown procedures and remove or dispose of contaminants
3. Remove blockages
   • Identify and confirm location and nature of blockage
   • Conduct skip isolation procedures and safety provisions prior to visual inspection and/or removal of blockage
   • Remove blockages
   • Recommence skip operations
4. Conduct end-of-shift activities
   • Complete all required written documentation clearly, concisely and on time
   • Pass on end of shift information to oncoming shift
5. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Isolate skip before conducting operator maintenance
   • Service and make minor adjustments to equipment
   • Clean skip equipment
   • Restore skip operations

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

demonstrates completion of conducting skip operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing start-up and shutdown procedures

applying dust suppression and extraction methods

loading skip with materials ensuring the load:

does not exceed capacity

is appropriate to minimise spills

completing skip operations

identifying, confirming location and nature of blockages

completing removal of blockages

isolating skip prior to maintenance

maintaining, servicing and cleaning skip equipment

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting skip operations through:

hand and power tools

winder systems and operations

shaft configuration and construction

shaft services and installations (pipes, cables, ladders etc)

identification of defects relevant to skip operations through inspection or observation

trip and fault procedures and abnormal conditions

site emergency procedures

communication system between cage and winder

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

geological and technical data (basic)

isolation and permit-to work systems and procedures

mine ventilation system

site procedures

in-shaft communications equipment
